Shirt sleeves replaced the seven layers of last Saturday and the ground was at its most verdant as a much changed team participated in Brame seniors warm up routine; missing; lurking in the depths of the changing room, were veterans JR and the older Fisher. Our physios challenge is to get these two old soldiers to flex their creaky old limbs in his pre match routine.
Opening bowlers J.Brame and J. Kimber will bowl better although Kimber tried very hard to bowl a fuller length and his 6 overs conceded only 16. Brame, although finding some encouraging swing, struggled to control his line.
The debut curse that affected the unfortunate Kearney last weekend struck again and Macilwaine after six decent overs of medium pace tore a hamstring! I. Reed bowled two spells of controlled seam bowling and it was good to have DF back in the side to trundle in up the hill wheeling away with those now famous leg cutters. The most effective bowler however was Liam Grimwood who continued the form of last week with his best ever figures.
159 on a slow low wicket was, despite the efforts of the Brockley bowlers, a challenging score.
Over cream scones Brockley’s senior players debated languidly who was the worst ever runner in the history of the club; the field was narrowed down to two candidates for this dubious accolade; Dean Sykes and Mark Blackledge; before a conclusion could be reached play was resumed with opinion divided.

Stuart Fisher: The worst runner in the history of Brockley Cricket Club |
|
It was ironic then that the Brockley innings was defined by some of the worst running witnessed in the history of the club; first team captain Stu Fisher, who was batting serenely, was the main offender running the unfortunate bilious Blackledge out and then, whilst seemingly cruising towards victory, calling the indecisive Isaac Reed for a suicidal single, running himself out. Reed obviously thought that run outs were the theme of the day and anything that his first team captain could do he could do better; running out the hapless young Brame. High risk strategy by Reed I’d say as the boy’s formidable public relations officer (his mum Kate) was not impressed. Reed did however prove to his captain that he bats too low in the first team order with an innings of some quality. Despite a worthy effort by tail ender Grimwood, Brockley fell 19 runs short of the Eye total.
Argument over then! Over post match drinks the unanimous conclusion was that without doubt Fisher (junior) had proved himself to be the worst runner in the 50 year history of the club. An award will be made at our end of season dinner!
Each week there will be a captain’s man of the match award. This week the award goes to Jack Brame for a moment of brilliance in which he dived full length at fine leg to stop a boundary before throwing powerfully to achieve a run out with a direct hit. It was exceptional and brilliant piece of fielding.
