brockley vs east bergholt
Brockley , sponsored by PuntersRevenge.com , welcomed East Bergholt for their final game of the season and a last chance to drag themselves off the bottom of the table and in the direction of Division Two survival. The omens were not good when captain Byford inexplicably lost the toss and found themselves batting as the rain clouds gathered. Things did not improve as Brockley lost their first wicket without scoring and Bergholt's 11th man arrived in the shape of ex-England star Neil Foster. Undeterred Fisher (35) and Kearney (42) continued their late season run spree to take the score to a promising 70 for 1 off only 16 overs. Brockley then returned to type and lost 3 quick wickets and only collected 30 runs from the next 15 overs. However R Jones (54) and P Webb did not panic and with additional support from T Fenner, Brockley picked up the rate to close on 176 all from their full allocation of overs.
In reply Bergholt found batting difficult but getting out even harder as Brockley spilled 4 catches in the space of 10 balls. Just as Brockley were starting to think it really wasn't going to be their day a smart run out from Cowley got their challenge back on track. They kept the pressure on as Sykes (4 for 27) and I Reed (1 for 30) put the brake on Bergholt's scoring . At the halfway stage Bergholt were on 45 for 4 and the Brockley outfielding had risen rapidly to the standard of barely abject. When B Jeffries(1 for 33) and R Webb (3 for 23) started their spells the game was still very much in the balance. Both bowled with confidence and determination and were well supported by fielders that had fortuitously finally woken up. Bergholt tried to get back on terms with a number of big shots but were unable to keep up with the rising run rate and were finally dismissed for 119 in a game that was very competitive but played in a good spirit given that both sides had to win the stay in the division. Other results went Brockley's way and therefore their season - long struggle ended with an almost inexplicable avoidance of the drop to division three.
