Not much fun in the sun
Marshall Hatchick Div 8
Brockley 2nd Xl lost to St Margaret's by 117 runs Brockley 6 points Ipswich points With a team of nine players under 19 the Brockley 2nd Xl sponsored by Sovereign Financial Services Chesham (Mike White) suffered a crushing 117 run defeat in their last league game of the season against champions elect St Margaret's. Fielding first the West Suffolk youngsters bowled creditable with the left arm opening duo of Kimber [2.36] and Grimwood [1.39] continuing with their impressive end of season form. Grimwood in particular has had a fine season topping the team's bowling averages and Kimber's form surely means a regular first team spot next season. On a hot late summer's afternoon and on a excellent batting strip and parched outfield the visitor's young bowlers gave their all despite some wishing they were participating in that other sport with the large round ball and P.Kearney, J. Brame and A Shinn all picked up wickets. Shinn's effort [3. 31] illustrated, after a difficult bowling season, what can be achieved by a willingness to practise. The Brockley team's fielding was again immaculate with only one chance being spilled, the highlight being the one handed reflex slip catch deflected off the keeper to D. Bugg. The commendable efforts of the Brockley bowlers and fielders meant that the home side finished on a below par 220 and surrounded 10 overs of their innings to their opponents The home side's support of their club bar during the course of the day resulted in a some boisterous behaviour when they took to the field and their impatience to return to their pint pots was not hindered by the fragile Brockley batting as only three of the team's batsman reached double figures; E.Smith [22], P.Reed [19] and P. Kearney [19] all looked set and were batting fluently before making careless mistakes. The rest of the batting once again folded disappointingly [103 all out] with only Shinn and Kimber displaying any determination to keep their opponents from the bar. Buggy's stunning reflex catch at slip was this weeks "Champagne Moment" and their were two M of the M contenders Patrick's wickets and runs and Bone for his bowling spell of character and crucial catch; Bone shades it, It was a very sad end to the season for me, the behaviour of our hosts was appalling, the language on the field was a disgrace and as a mature team they set a shocking example; smoking on the field and smashing the stumps down when they were out; I fear that even without drink it would have been a similar story. Good luck to those teams that they will have to play them in Division 7 next year. I'm glad that I wont have to. However my main disappointment was that only one of the regular second team squad stopped for a post match drink despite the game finishing early, it was my last game as captain and it would have been lovely to have shared a drink with those players who have generally been very supportive or at least to have been able to have said "goodbye" before they left. The end of season averages have been completed by Bone and have been posted on the web site www.brockleycc.com At some stage Ill send a review of the season.
