Brockley Midweek Drama
With two games remaining, Brockley Midweek Eleven staged a dramatic last gasp effort to haul themselves out of the relegation zone. Victory over Horseheath in the dark gave us a glimmer of hope, as we learnt Haverhill had beaten Weston Colville. This left us needing Haverhill to do us yet another favour by beating Weston Colville in the return fixture. At the same time, victory against Saffron Walden in our final match was vital. Haverhill did their part, chasing an unlikely 218 runs without losing a wicket. This meant that victory against East Anglian Premier League club, Saffron Walden, would see us leap frog Weston Colville by a matter of a few bonus points.

Saffron Walden batted first and some decent bowling and tight fielding restricted them to 141 for 6, I. Reed taking three wickets. The Brockley order was brimming with batsmen, which allowed Joe to free his arms, scoring a quickfire 28. Danish captain, Freddy Klokker, then held the innings together with a fine 62 not out, to see Brockley home. Simon Byford hit the winning boundary from the solitary ball he faced, securing a 6 wicket victory and definate division 1 status for Brockley next season.

Season Averages can be found in the stats section of this site.
A new captain is needed if we are going to continue next season.

Chairman's update for July
Brockley Cricket Club Newsletter - July 2010

What an eventful month of cricket we have had in July including the visit of Sky Sports to our ground for our Ist XI match against Hadleigh (Sky are following their fortunes throughout the season). I understand that the highlights will be shown during the lunch interval on the Saturday of the 4th Test versus Pakistan, although the term ‘test’ is used rather loosely here given the abject performances of the Pakistan team. I think I can say with some confidence that any of our Brockley sides could put in a better display in the field than this summer’s visitors from the sub-continent. It has been a month of strong performances from all our teams. The 1st XI have moved out of the relegation zone with 3 wins from 5 games and now lie 4th from bottom. It is vital that we consolidate this position in the coming weeks. The 2nd XI have won 4 of their 5 games in July and still lie 3rd in Division 8 with an outside chance of promotion. The Sunday XI continue to go from strength to strength and won all their 3 games in the month and now lie in a respectable mid-table position, 5th out of 10 teams. Finally the midweek team have completed their fixtures and wins in their last 2 games ensured they stayed up in Division 1 for another season, finishing 4th out of 6 teams.

On an individual level Joe Reed added another 3 centuries to the ones mentioned in the June newsletter and now has 9 for the season. Jack Kimber added another 4 wicket haul for the 1st XI to the one mentioned last month, and Joe Reed, Isaac Reed and Dean Sykes continue to also take wickets regularly for the 1st XI (Isaac’s 5-28 versus Brightlingsea being the standout performance). For the 2nds Tom Fenner had another 6 wicket haul this time against Sudbourne Hall, young Tristan Blackledge produced a match winning spell of 4-20 against Woodbridge and James Jones batted beautifully for 82 to steer us home against West Bergholt.

Youth Cricket Update
The under 13s won their final game of the season against Woolpit, a great end to the season ensuring a top half finish in a very strong league. Woolpit scored 125 in their 20 overs and we got them with a few overs to spare with 8 wickets in hand. Tristan Blackledge and Ryan McGowan put on a 100 partnership ending on 42 not out and 47 not out respectively. The under 13s did really well this season playing in more than 20 games, the most ever for a Brockley youth team. We don’t have the depth of squad of the other clubs but we certainly have the quality. The bigger clubs have often said they were surprised by us given we are a small club. The boys showed a lot of heart and great companionship and our results reflected this. They learnt a lot and had lots of fun along the way.

The other highlight of the year was the strengthening of the younger squad under Dave Bowler, Andrew English and Dan Boreham building on the great work over the last couple of years by Stuart Fisher. There are now more than 25 boys in this young age group and in a couple of years time these boys will be playing competitive cricket in the under 11s and under 13s and performing well. Finally congratulations to Ryan McGowan who recently made his county debut against Cambridgeshire in an age group up (under 14s). He opened the bowling and did really well.

Brockley U13 latest results
Brockley U13 sponsored by Barry Carpenter played the cup final on Thursday and it was a close fought affair against Barnadiston. If you recall last time we only got 23 runs chasing their score of 110. Back then that game was our worst performance of the year and we haven’t played like that since.

Anyway, we got 107 which is a respectable score and they needed 18 overs to get them with the loss of four wickets. So this was a big turnaround. Our batting was very good even though we lost Tristan early. Rory Milbank scored very quickly. Finlay Smith and Matt Bowler stepped up and got runs and Ryan McGowan top scored with a good hard hitting 39 not out. Our bowling and fielding was very tight but they had some very good batsmen which in the end we couldn’t hold. They just beat us and their manager thanked us for a hard fought game. This he said they lacked in a lot of their other games during the season.

Our Friday night game against Battisford we lost with only 2 balls to go. This I am not concerned about in the slightest. We let Finlay Smith, Tristan Blackledge, Rory Milbank, Jonny Frost, Jack Brill, Ed Briars etc all have a rest for this game. We won the toss and batted scoring 114 in the end. Angus Bridges, Joel Walters-Smith opened and put on 45 without a loss of wicket by the 8th over. Then they moved on to let others score quickly with Ryan getting in his 40s ably supported by Matt Bowler and Ben Haughton who batted well at the end. Missing so many of our regular bowlers was always going to be a challenge. We bowled everyone ensuring all did something. The highlight was Matt Jeffries coming on 1st change for his 4 overs bowling accurately and keeping their scoring down. Ben Haughton did a great job behind the stumps and all our fielding was excellent.

All in all we should be proud of ourselves.

Brockley U13 v Mildenhall
Brockley U13 v Mildenhall

On Tuesday Brockley played Mildenhall. Mildenhall as usual turned up with a very strong team. They are by far the strongest team on the county. We had our strongest team though. We batted 1st but started slowly with only 6 runs by the 5th over. In the end though we went onto score a good 105 off our 20. Tristan batted well coming close to his 50 and Ryan McGowan came in at the end scoring 30 off 14 balls including a very impressive 6. We had a bad start in our bowling with Ryan slipping over on the wet pitch on his 1st ball so he had to go off for a while to recover. This didn’t stop us though and as usual our big heart as a team showed and we soldiered on. Tristan, Finlay, Joel, Jack Brill, Rory Milbank, Ed Briars and Ryan at the end all bowled extremely well getting wickets along the way pushing them to get the runs with only a couple of over to spare. We were just 20 runs short. After the game I was told we are one of the few teams that really pushes them to the end. Their coach was also very impressed with Matt Bowler our keeper. He thought he was a completely different person!

Anyway, even though we just lost, the boys should be proud of how they played. As usual showing lots of commitment and heart.

The next game is the cup final versus Barnadiston on the Thursday 24th June at Thurlow starting at 6pm. We then play Battisford at Battisford on Friday 25th June. Please let me know if you cannot make either these dates. We may have too many available so we may need to give a couple of players a rest.

And finally, we can take this Friday (18th) night off training given a lots of other commitments. So go and do something different, have a bbq, watch a football game or whatever and see you next Thursday at Thurlow.
