Youth Cricket Update
The under 13s won their final game of the season against Woolpit, a great end to the season ensuring a top half finish in a very strong league. Woolpit scored 125 in their 20 overs and we got them with a few overs to spare with 8 wickets in hand. Tristan Blackledge and Ryan McGowan put on a 100 partnership ending on 42 not out and 47 not out respectively. The under 13s did really well this season playing in more than 20 games, the most ever for a Brockley youth team. We don’t have the depth of squad of the other clubs but we certainly have the quality. The bigger clubs have often said they were surprised by us given we are a small club. The boys showed a lot of heart and great companionship and our results reflected this. They learnt a lot and had lots of fun along the way.

The other highlight of the year was the strengthening of the younger squad under Dave Bowler, Andrew English and Dan Boreham building on the great work over the last couple of years by Stuart Fisher. There are now more than 25 boys in this young age group and in a couple of years time these boys will be playing competitive cricket in the under 11s and under 13s and performing well. Finally congratulations to Ryan McGowan who recently made his county debut against Cambridgeshire in an age group up (under 14s). He opened the bowling and did really well.

Brockley U13 latest results
Brockley U13 sponsored by Barry Carpenter played the cup final on Thursday and it was a close fought affair against Barnadiston. If you recall last time we only got 23 runs chasing their score of 110. Back then that game was our worst performance of the year and we haven’t played like that since.

Anyway, we got 107 which is a respectable score and they needed 18 overs to get them with the loss of four wickets. So this was a big turnaround. Our batting was very good even though we lost Tristan early. Rory Milbank scored very quickly. Finlay Smith and Matt Bowler stepped up and got runs and Ryan McGowan top scored with a good hard hitting 39 not out. Our bowling and fielding was very tight but they had some very good batsmen which in the end we couldn’t hold. They just beat us and their manager thanked us for a hard fought game. This he said they lacked in a lot of their other games during the season.

Our Friday night game against Battisford we lost with only 2 balls to go. This I am not concerned about in the slightest. We let Finlay Smith, Tristan Blackledge, Rory Milbank, Jonny Frost, Jack Brill, Ed Briars etc all have a rest for this game. We won the toss and batted scoring 114 in the end. Angus Bridges, Joel Walters-Smith opened and put on 45 without a loss of wicket by the 8th over. Then they moved on to let others score quickly with Ryan getting in his 40s ably supported by Matt Bowler and Ben Haughton who batted well at the end. Missing so many of our regular bowlers was always going to be a challenge. We bowled everyone ensuring all did something. The highlight was Matt Jeffries coming on 1st change for his 4 overs bowling accurately and keeping their scoring down. Ben Haughton did a great job behind the stumps and all our fielding was excellent.

All in all we should be proud of ourselves.

Brockley U13 v Mildenhall
Brockley U13 v Mildenhall

On Tuesday Brockley played Mildenhall. Mildenhall as usual turned up with a very strong team. They are by far the strongest team on the county. We had our strongest team though. We batted 1st but started slowly with only 6 runs by the 5th over. In the end though we went onto score a good 105 off our 20. Tristan batted well coming close to his 50 and Ryan McGowan came in at the end scoring 30 off 14 balls including a very impressive 6. We had a bad start in our bowling with Ryan slipping over on the wet pitch on his 1st ball so he had to go off for a while to recover. This didn’t stop us though and as usual our big heart as a team showed and we soldiered on. Tristan, Finlay, Joel, Jack Brill, Rory Milbank, Ed Briars and Ryan at the end all bowled extremely well getting wickets along the way pushing them to get the runs with only a couple of over to spare. We were just 20 runs short. After the game I was told we are one of the few teams that really pushes them to the end. Their coach was also very impressed with Matt Bowler our keeper. He thought he was a completely different person!

Anyway, even though we just lost, the boys should be proud of how they played. As usual showing lots of commitment and heart.

The next game is the cup final versus Barnadiston on the Thursday 24th June at Thurlow starting at 6pm. We then play Battisford at Battisford on Friday 25th June. Please let me know if you cannot make either these dates. We may have too many available so we may need to give a couple of players a rest.

And finally, we can take this Friday (18th) night off training given a lots of other commitments. So go and do something different, have a bbq, watch a football game or whatever and see you next Thursday at Thurlow.

Brockley U13 v Haverhill
U13 v Haverhill

It was a great win last night versus Haverhill. It was disappointing we had 2 players drop out at the last minute but 1 was unavoidable due to illness. We now have new players who are very keen to play so in future we can replace those missing with this enthusiasm.

Brockley sponsored by Barry Carpenter won the toss and elected to bat. We did well to score 95 as Haverhill bowled very tight. Our openers Jonny Frost and Angus Bridges did their job before losing their wickets pushing things along. Tristan Blackledge batted very well as usual seeing us through to the end. At the other thing Finlay Smith and Ryan McGowan came and went hitting a few boundaries along the way before losing their wickets. The thing which impressed me most was the way our middle order stepped up to the plate when we lost our top order with plenty of overs to go. Joel Walters-Smith did very well scoring when he could whilst defending when necessary (a trade mark of a good batsmen).

We opened our bowling with Finlay and Joel who kept Haverhill runs down whilst getting a couple of wickets along the way. By 10 overs they were 46-2 and on target to win runs wise. Tristan and Ryan came onto bowl and applied more pressure with their quick and accurate bowling. Our fielding was also impressive. Ben Haughton had his best performance by far behind the stumps. New boy Matt Jeffries along with Ben Browning kept alert and cut off everything that came their way. These middle overs proved too much for Haverhill where they just couldn’t score. Towards the end one big bowling highlight was Angus who came on as our 5th bowler. He not only got out their best batsmen out but even more wickets and also restricted their scoring. This helped a lot to restrict then to 76 off their 20 overs.

Tristan captained well rotating the bowlers nicely and having the right players in the right place in the field.

All in all a great win.

Brockley U13 v Bury
Brockley under 13s sponsored by Barry Carpenter played Bury St Edmunds on Tuesday 25th May and Brockley won. This was a double victory as this was a West Suffolk league game and a Borders league game.

Brockley won the toss and batted first. We set ourselves an innings target of 125 with a minimum of 40 after the first 8 overs. In previous games we were a little slow at the start and had to do a lot of catching up come the end of the innings where we still had wickets in hand. Our openers Jonny Frost and Angus Bridges did exactly what was needed. By the 8th over we were bang on 40 without the loss of a wicket. Then Angus got out trying to push things along further for an excellent innings of 27. Tristan Blackledge came in and started scoring from his first ball and Jonny switched to a support role. Knowing we had more batsmen to come Jonny in the sixteen over got out trying to hit the ball out of the ground for a well deserved 20. Ryan McGowan came in and started scoring straight away. We ended the 20 overs with 2 for 130 (10 more than our target) with Tristan scoring 38 not out and Ryan 16 not out. This was a great result and gave the bowlers something to defend.

We were one player short and then we lost Finlay just before the start of the play to an injury so we were down to nine players (I don’t think we have had a full team!). This didn’t stop us though and every one stepped up and did their job. We used 6 bowlers in all. We ensure everyone does something. Ryan opened and bowled a very fast spell restricting their scoring. At the other end we were bold and opened with spin with Joel Walters Smith. This variety and his accurate bowling confused them totally and they weren’t scoring. Tristan as captain sensed the batsmen struggle and kept both these bowlers on for their full spells and it worked because after eight overs Bury were around twenty still needing one hundred and ten or so off twelve overs. Tristan kept the pressure on by bowling himself and Jack Brill for their full spells. Their bowling like the openers was good and accurate. Tristan tactically got it exactly right. Come the sixteen over he had bowled out his four main bowlers but by now their target had risen to a difficult fourteen an over. It was left to our part time bowlers to step up to the plate and perform. Angus Bridges and Ed Briars came on for these final overs and along with exceptional keeping throughout by Matt Bowler and Ben Haughton Bury could not score the runs. Bury ended with 3 for 113. It was tense right up to the very end. So it was great captaincy and a good all round team effort as usual.

So now we have five victories (two West Suffolk league, two Borders league, one Borders cup) and two near victories (close losses) (one West Suffolk league and West Suffolk cup) and only one big loss (one Borders league).

Well done again.

Next game 7th June (Monday) – West Suffolk League Woolpit Home

Then the next day:

8th June (Tuesday) – Borders League Haverhill Away
