About Newmarket & Suffolk Real Tennis Club
Newmarket has been home to three real tennis courts. The first court was commissioned in 1610 by King James I of England. It was built in the High Street as part of his Newmarket palace, now Palace House. Both he and Charles I played on it frequently. Following Charles' execution, the court fell into disrepair and was rarely used.

Colonel Harry McCalmont built a court in 1902 on his Cheveley Park Estate but he died shortly afterwards and the court, which was demolished in 1924, was never used.

The present court was built by Sir Charles Rose, the MP for Newmarket, in 1900. One of the leading race horse owners of his time, he commissioned Joseph Bickley, the specialist builder, to construct the tennis court as an extension to his residence, Suffolk House. The result was one of the finest and most modern courts of its time. The court was opened in June 1901 with a match between resident professional and world champion, Peter Latham and 'Punch' Fairs, who suceeded Latham as world champion.

Exhibition matches were frequently arranged. On at least one occasion King Edward VII was late arriving at Newmarket races because he was intent on watching a match.

The current court is one of only 47 real tennis courts remaining worldwide.
